1. What are methods of stem cell (Bone Marrow) collection?

  • In 80% of situation, it is done by Peripheral Stem Cell Donation process. It is similar to normal blood donation. It is done as an out patient procedure without anesthesia. You can recommence job next day. This has been in the medical world for more than 25 years. You would be given 3-5 doses medicine called G CSF as injection one dose each day for 3-5 days prior to the day of donation.
  • In 20% cases it is done by Bone Marrow Collection method
  • In this method, the procedure is done under anaesthesia. So there won’t be pain during the collection. This is minimally invasive by putting a special needle in the backbone not to the spine. It does not require stitches afterwards. The risk of complications during any general anesthetic will be discussed with you at the time. You can get little pain after the effect of the general anesthetic is weaned. This can be managed by simple analgesics. You may need to take 1-2 days off duty before you resume your work.

    2. Does G CSF injection cause any short or long-term side effect?

  • Studies have been conducted by monitoring healthy donors for several years after 3-5 doses of G CSF and proved that there is no long-term adverse effect apart from transient bone pain or flu like symptoms in some cases, which can be managed by simple analgesics like Paracetamol.
  • 3. Do I permanently lose my stem cells, when I donate my stem cells (Bone Marrow)?

  • No, One of the character of stem cell is it can multiply by themselves very fast. More over when you donate, you are giving only 1-2% percentage of whole stem cells in your body. Your blood stem cells completely replenish themselves within 6-8 weeks.
